Three reasons to hate Facebook and Twitter

Here are some good reasons to hate today’s social media giants:

  1. They own your friends — This really hits you when you try to get off the damn thing. We are lazy, keeping up with friends is hard. Facebook made it easy, but for a price; they now own those relationships. Just think about who you would lose access to if you left Facebook, and it should make you angry. You created those relationships, not them. Take them back.
  2. They’ve totally fucked up our society — Facebook is a party where everyone is given a megaphone and the megaphone size is increased when people respond to what you say, both good and bad. The result; the biggest trolls have the biggest megaphones. What’s worse is that there is almost no accountability. Before FB you had to earn a big megaphone; be a politician or a super star. And there is accountability there, we can vote them out or not buy their movies. But there is real accountability for FB and Twitter, and the result is that we’ve exposed and elevated the baseline crazy of the whole country. Proof? Just look at the anti-vax movement before and after social media. What was fringe is now mainstream and we have massive new outbreaks of preventable diseases like we haven’t seen in decades.
  3. You are shuckin’ and jivin’ for their profit — They’ve got you locked in because they have your friends. They have you saying crazy stuff because that’s how you get up on the feed and get those likes. All while they make money sticking ads between our status updates. We act the fool, they make the money. And all we wanted was a way to keep up with our friends.

Facebook has already talked about how they want to regain our trust and become the place where we connect with friends and family. But that’s a load of bullshit. They didn’t change their revenue model or their algorithms. They are still making tons of ad money while you dance to their little tune.

Remember life before Facebook? Actually talking with people face to face, creating real relationships? Remember all that time you had when you weren’t constantly glancing at FB and Twitter to see how many likes or retweets you’ve got. You can have that again, and restore a little sanity to the world at the same time. Get mad and then get off.
